MALMESBURY Victoria boss Wayne Kibble is keeping his feet firmly on the ground despite seeing his side boost their title chances with a fifth win on the bounce on Saturday.

The 5-0 success at home to Sarum Youth keeps them fifth in the table, eight points behind the top two of Melksham Town Reserves and Ludgershall Sports, but Vics have four games in hand.

Kibble says his troops still have a long way to go if they are to claim the crown because of a packed end-of-season schedule.

Vics have to play eight games over the next four weeks, starting away at a Trowbridge Town side who beat FC Chippenham 3-1 last weekend.

“We’ve got a few games in hand but we have got some tough games coming up, like against both Trowbridge sides. They are on fire at the moment and have picked up a lot of points,” said Kibble.

“They will be the games that decide if we have got the chance to finish top. We know we are in there but we’re not getting ahead of ourselves.

“Trowbridge Town had another good win at the weekend, so it’s going to be a very tough game for us. We’d take a point from that as it’s a case of us not losing between now and the end of the season.”

Despite the emphatic scoreline, Vics did have it all their own way against Sarum as all the goals came in the final 20 minutes. The hosts were frustrated for long periods before Ed Wilkins finally broke the deadlock.

He then went on to complete an impressive 10-minute hat-trick, with Alan Griffin and 17-year-old Ewan Kenny also on target for Vics.

Kibble added: “I’ve got to give Sarum their due. They were in the game for 70 minutes and we just couldn’t get the breakthrough. That was more to their good defensive work than our poor finishing.

“They worked extremely hard to keep us out and put in a really good shift but once we finally got the goal, the floodgates opened.

“The boys stayed focussed for 90 minutes. They could easily have got frustrated or tried too hard but they played really intelligent football and just waited and waited until finally the breakthrough came.”

Melksham Town Reserves climbed to the top of the table thanks to a crucial 1-0 win at home to their Corsham Town counterparts, capitalising on a 2-2 draw for previous leaders Ludgershall at Westbury United Reserves.

Trowbridge Wanderers are up to third thanks a slender 1-0 success over bottom side Marlborough Town.

Wootton Bassett Town Development got the better of a 3-2 thriller away at Vale of Pewsey, and Wilts Calne Town were also triumphant on the road, beating Supermarine Sports 3-1.

Wroughton beat Devizes Town 2-0 and Southbrook came away with a 1-0 win on their trip to Shrewton United.
