MARLBOROUGH Town hauled themselves off the foot of the table with an impressive 3-0 win at home to Devizes Town Reserves.

The victory was just a fourth of the season for Nando Rossi’s side and they have now climbed above both Vale of Pewsey and Westbury United Reserves, who lost 2-0 at Trowbridge Wanderers.

All the goals came in the second half at Elcot Lane, with Nathan Good breaking the deadlock for the home side with a good finish in the box.

Robert Harland then doubled the advantage with a fine 25-yard strike, which went in off the post, and Good put the icing on the cake with his second of the game late on.

Boss Rossi said: “I’m very pleased, considering we were playing my hometown club, so I knew a few of their players.

“It was good to get the win, to keep a clean sheet, and get ourselves off the bottom of the league. It was a positive result all round.

“We’d had a few opportunities to score in the first half but just didn’t quite make the most of them. We were then very good in the second half and deserved to get the win.

“I do need to give special praise to Andy Neale in goal. He made two really good saves to keep us in the game and Devizes then had a couple of good efforts late on but he kept them out to give us the win.

“It was great to win as they have been few and far between for us this season. We have come close a few times and lost, and when you don’t win many, it always feels extra special.”

Rossi is now targeting a few more wins before the end of the season, starting with their trip to Westbury United Reserves on Saturday.

“This win sets us up nicely for that game. They are in and around us in the table, so we have to aim to get something from those types of games,” said Rossi.

“The target is not to finish bottom. We’d like to finish three or four places above if we can.

“We’ve got 10 games left and we just want to get as many points as we can. We’d like to try and get two or three, or maybe even more victories.”

Marlborough had previously slipped to 4-1 defeat away at fourth-placed FC Chippenham Youth on Thursday night.

Elsewhere on Saturday, Malmesbury Victoria were 3-1 winners away at Trowbridge Town and Wilts Calne Town beat Sarum Youth 2-1.
