NOT for the first time this season, Supermarine boss Dave Webb was left ruing a late goal as Tiverton Town snatched a 2-2 draw on Saturday.

Supermarine started well, with a change in formation, and were a goal up inside six minutes as their first meaningful attack of the game was ended by Josh Morse heading home Marcus Johnson-Schuster’s cross.

That lead was soon doubled when Chris Taylor set up Ryan Stanners whose volley went straight in the top corner after just 11 minutes.

However Webb’s side failed to hold onto the lead in the second half as Owen Howe pulled a goal back for the visitors before they levelled four minutes into added time through Tony Lee.

“We scored two fantastic early goals and we are two goals up in 12 minutes playing a different way,” said Webb.

“We changed the shape of the team a little bit, looking at the personnel we had available and it really did work.

“Going forward we were superb at times and, it has probably been our Achilles heel this season, we don’t finish teams off when we have the opportunities to do so.

“We should have got the third goal that probably would have seen the game off and then we can’t see the game off and they score four minutes into injury time.

“I would like to go through my stats and see how many goals we have conceded in injury time, but it is far too many and late goals have really hurt us this season.

“It is hard to take when you have come so close and played so well.

“The performance was good and a lot of their people said we were probably one of the best footballing sides they had seen there all season but you can be a good footballing side but you have to win.”

Supermarine now face a tricky task when they play host to second-placed Stratford Town, who themselves scored a late winner with two minutes remaining in the reverse fixture on New Year’s Day.

Webb will be without Harry Etheridge for the match but is hoping that Ross Adams will have shaken off a dead leg.

“The point gets us up to 50 points but we have a very tough game tomorrow against Stratford who are flying high in second,” he added.

“Three of the four games we have left are in or around the play-offs. They are all tough games and we just have to finish the season with as many points as we can.

“We will approach the game in the same way. We want to try and win this game tomorrow and hopefully we can take those chances that again we didn’t and be able to see a game through.

“The players when they think about the game yesterday will know it was a game they should have won.”
