IT WAS ‘the same old story’ for Swindon Supermarine as they threw away a lead late on to go down 2-1 away to Wimborne Town.

On a pitch that had taken the toll of a long season, it was the visitors who took the lead through this season’s top goal scorer Luke Hopper.

The ball was played into Chris Taylor on the counter in the 74th minute and the midfielder was able to play the ball behind the Wimborne back-line to Hopper who saw off his defender before sliding the ball under the body of the opposition goalkeeper.

With just 15 minutes left on the clock many would have expected Supermarine to go on a claim the three points but with three minutes left on the clock, Mark Gamble grabbed the equaliser with a close-range overhead kick.

That was followed by a 90th minute strike from Luke Holmes who cut inside Kyle Lapham and Ryan O’Hara before drilling the ball into the corner of Sam Warrell’s goal.

“It was a great game and the pitch wasn’t very good and it was an end of season sort of game,” said Taylor after the match.

“They were quite a hard working, in-your-face, team and we battled through really and managed to go a goal up and we were looking comfortable.

“Then at the end it was the same story as all season and we gave away two late goals that have cost us.

“After Hopper scored you’d think we’d be able to go on and get the points but like I said it is the same story of the season with people being left free in the box.”

Taylor couldn’t put his finger on why Supermarine had conceded so many late goals but is hoping for a few new faces in the summer to help freshen the team up.

“It seems to be something we can’t do. We can’t see games out, it seems to be embedded in the team and is part of our make-up and is something that needs to be sorted out in the summer,” he added.

“We need to freshen our squad up quite significantly and that is down to the manager.

“It is not just numbers, we need players who are good enough to come in and improve the team.

“We have had a lot of injuries and have had to have different teams each week which has not helped.

“We have got no consistency and it is just a season to forget really and hopefully we can have a good summer and come back better next year.”
