A SHARE of the spoils was what both teams deserved according to Chippenham Town boss Mark Collier after his side drew 1-1 with Cambridge City.

Iain Harvey was harshly penalised for hands on four minutes when the ball was driven at him from close quarters. Danny Kelly’s resulting free kick found the top corner giving keeper Kent Kauppinen no chance.

Four minutes later parity was restored when Michael Pook’s free kick from wide on the right was firmly headed home by Jordan Roberts.

Charlie Griffin then saw an effort strike the crossbar before a second half that left little to the imagination.

“First half was quite decent really,” said Collier.

“They scored an early goal from a free-kick which I thought we were unfortunate to concede, it has been blasted from close range and the referee has given it as handball.

“Fair play to the lad, he has gone over the wall and into the top corner.

“We responded very quickly and the rest of the first half was very even.

“I think it was important to come back quite quickly and it shows that we have a positive intent and we are confident we can compete with most sides so there was no need to panic.

“In the second half the defences were on top in all truth, it was not a great spectacle.

“I think overall was a fair result. I don’t think anyone deserved to win the game and neither side deserved to lose.

“The unbeaten run continues and we are certainly moving in the right direction.”

Chippenham are now unbeaten in their last four games and Collier believes that momentum could be important going into next season.

“We said to the players before the game that there are three games left and nine points on offer and we have one of those now and if we can get another six out of the next two games then I think it will be good,” added Collier.

“I think it is important to finish strongly because it sets the tone for the next season.

“We think we have more than a competitive squad and if we can add to that in the summer then I would like think, with a years experience that some of those players have gained at that level, we can really push on.”
