A HAIR of the dog may have been required for a few players yesterday morning after Greyhound put in a five-star performance to lift the Sunday League Knockout Cup final and complete the treble.

Greyhound ran out 5-1 winners at Supermarine’s Webb’s Wood Stadium to add the trophy to the Division One title and the Wiltshire Sunday Cup.

After a strong start from Division Two outfit Deers Leap, Glenn Armstrong was able to settle any nerves in the Greyhound team with his strike midway through the first half.

Rory Sprawl finished off a well worked team goal to give Dave Hawkins' side a 2-0 lead at half-time before Sprawl netted his second after the break to put them in a commanding position.

Dan Drewett and Nathan Blackford both scored either side of a strike from Deers Leap to secure the cup and kick-start the celebrations, which continued after the final whistle at the Greyhound Pub on Faringdon Road.

“It’s massive, it doesn’t get done very often and we are over the moon,” said Hawkins.

“It is still one of the hardest things to do, especially the Wilts Cup, when you are playing sides all over Wiltshire, and Division One is always competitive with New Century, Gas and Walcot.

“We had a good season but you are always a little bit wary.

“We played them pre-season and they are a good side, they will be a good addition to Division One that is for sure.

“But you can never tell in football so I was quietly confident but not over confident leading into it.

“I thought they started a little bit brighter than us.

“It took us about 20 minutes to get going and then we scored a goal and settled down a little bit after that.

“Again they started a little bit brighter than us in the second half and then we scored again which pretty much killed the game off.

“We had a good celebration in the pub after the game and it was a good atmosphere.”

Having secured the treble, Hawkins is hoping for a settled summer and to go again next season but he knows it will be a tough ask to replicate this season’s success.

“Next season is going to be even more competitive with Deers Leap and The Globe coming up,” he added.

“We will just chill, that’s it now.

“We have got a decent squad full of young players so we don’t really need to sign anyone.

“I am hoping for a relatively quiet summer.”
