SWINDON Spitfires Under 16 ended their season with a draw against champions Melksham Town.

Melksham needed to avoid defeat to win the league and took the lead, but only Helena Diaz-Butcher, Natalie Goodright, Amy Connaghan and Charley Reynolds all went close for Spitfires.

It was Maddy Brown who broke the deadlock for the visitors, with a strike from outside the area just before the break.

Spitfires rallied together well at half time and after the break pulled level. Natalie Goodright played a well-timed through ball for Helena Butcher-Diaz who scored accurately into the bottom corner.

Spitfires manager, Adam Wood, was taking charge of his last game and he was delighted with the result.

“I think we played really well and ended a very long season on a high,” said Wood.

“We have a good friendly rivalry with Melksham and although we did try for the win a draw was a satisfactory result for both teams.

“Maybe if we had a consistent team throughout the season our league position would have been higher, but this age group is always a difficult one to manage with exams, other sports being serious and boyfriends.

“Today is my last game with the Spitfires after five seasons at the club, I’m really going to miss the girls and I really wish them all the best for next season and further. They are going to be a fantastic side at adult level, so watch that space.”

Swindon Spitfires under 14s ended their league season with a 3-1 win at Sarum Youth.

Spitfires started brightly and finally saw their pressure pay off when Freya Sullivan’s fierce shot broke the from Tamzin Davis’ pass.

With 10 minutes gone in the second half Spitfires went two up after a Davis corner deflected off a Sarum defender to go in.

A couple of minutes later another Spitfires’ corner from Davis fell nicely to Lucy Scrannage who guided her header over the defender on the line into the back of the net.

Sarum did pull a goal back, but Spitfires held firm and were unlucky not to increase their lead further before the final whistle.
