MIDFIELDER Chris Taylor thinks that the new-look Swindon Supermarine have the potential to challenge for promotion next term – but the time for talking is over.

Since dropping out of the Premier Division in 2012, Marine have been perennial challengers at the top of the Evo-Stik League Southern Division One South & West but the trend was bucked last season when Dave Webb’s men slumped to a disappointing 14th-placed finish.

Nine new faces have come in at the Webb’s Wood Stadium as manager Webb shuffled his pack and Taylor reckons that Marine could be a force to be reckoned with but it is his and his team-mates responsibility to deliver.

“Last season was a bit flat and it’s not a league where you want to be mid-table,” said Taylor.

“We want to be pushing for promotion and anything less than the play-offs would be failure.

“I’m excited about the squad and I think that there are a lot of players that can do well at this level.

“The goalkeeper last year (Sam Warrell) was good but we’ve signed the best goalkeeper in the league now (Matt Bulman). Connor Waldon could play at a higher level and will score goals and the young left-back (Ryan Morgan) looks a good player.

“This squad should be good enough to get out of this league but there’s no point just talking about it – we’ve got to go out there and get the job done.

“But I’m looking forward to the season. I’m excited and can’t wait to get going.”

Goalkeeper Matt Bulman has returned to Marine from North Leigh whilst former loanee Connor Waldon has returned following his release by Swindon Town.

Webb has also plumped for winger Jacob Davidge from Cirencester Town, Highworth Town defender Ash Taylor and ex-Cirencester Town full-back Ryan Elliott, in addition to youngsters Ginaluca Michienzi, Ryan Morgan, Oli Bailey and Dan Lawrence.

Defender Cameron Pirie, who was dual-registered with Forest Green Rovers last season, is also back on a permanent basis.

Marine make the trip to Oxfordshire on Saturday to take on newly-relegated Banbury United in their curtain-raiser.
