SWINDON Supermarine boss Dave Webb was pleased with the approach of his players after they kicked-off the new season in fine form.

The Webb’s Wood outfit claimed an impressive 3-0 win over Banbury United, but it was not as straight-forward as the scoreline may suggest.

It took the visitors the first half to work the summer fatigue out of their legs and they rode their luck on a number of occasions and were only the width of a crossbar from going behind.

After re-grouping at half-time Supermarine came out stronger in the second half and it took just a minute before they broke the deadlock.

After summer signing Connor Waldon was denied by the goalkeeper from a corner, debutant Ash Taylor was on hand to side foot the ball home.

Supermarine doubled their lead just after the hour mark when Ryan Stanners and Josh Morse linked up to play in Waldon to open his account.

The visiting team wrapped up the three points and added some gloss to the scoreline as Luke Hopper converted from the penalty spot, with just two minutes left on the clock.

“It is always important to try and get a good start,” said Webb.

“Our preparations through pre-season have been excellent. We have had a lot of games, played eight friendlies against good opposition, so lots of different tests.

“It is all about that first game and getting those three points and I was really pleased with every player’s application yesterday, I thought they went about their business really well.

“The game was a little bit too open, especially in the first half.

“They had chances to score and so did we, but you often get that in the first game.

“Any victory on the first day is important and we were fortunate to be able to do that yesterday.

Webb was anxious not to get carried away with the first result of the season but believes the depth in his squad will hold them in good stead as they prepare for their next game against Shortwood United on Tuesday night.

“I think the good thing for us at the moment is the quality of the squad I have got,” added Webb.

“I had five good players on the bench, a couple who weren’t even in the squad, and you can make key substitutions and every player is very capable.

“That is a massive plus for us at the moment and hopefully the players understand that.

“If we can keep this group together then we have got a real opportunity to have a good season, but it is only one game.”
