MAX Slinn made amends for last week’s penalty miss as he got the only goal of the game from the spot in New College’s win away at Tytherington Rocks on Saturday.

Slinn saw a spot-kick saved in College’s 2-1 opening day defeat against Hook Norton a week earlier but he swiftly put that behind him to fire his team to their first points of the campaign.

The pivotal moment came just after the half-hour mark, when a Tytherington defender sent Olly Hunt sprawling in the box.

Although the narrow scoreline meant for a few nervy moments in the second half, assistant manager Matt Cosnett reckons College were more than worthy winners.

“Fair play to Max, he missed one last week but still had the guts to step up and take it again this week and it was a really good strike this time,” said Cosnett.

“We had a few other shots that shaved the post and a couple of one-on-one chances that we didn’t take.

“In the second half they had the slope and played a lot of long-ball football, but we dug in really well and saw the game out.

“We’re really pleased to get three points as it’s the first time we’ve been able to get a result up there.

“We have gone close a couple of times but the lads put in a really great shift on Saturday and we were able to come out with the win.

“We dug in really well and they were quite a big team, all six foot five lads and we had a couple of 16-year-olds in the squad, one of which was Dan Lawrence in goal.

“Their physicality was difficult and it made for a tough game, but the lads all worked really hard and I think we deserved to win at the end.”

Elsewhere, Purton surrendered a 3-1 lead with ten minutes to go as Easington Sports snatched a share of the spoils with a last-minute equaliser.

Ben Carter, Tatenda Majoni and Jamie Richards all hit the net for Justin Miller’s men but it was not enough to secure them victory.

Fairford Town were thumped 5-1 on their trip to North Leigh United, for whom Alfie Saunders stole the show with a five-goal salvo.
