FOUR points from two away games against opponents that reached last season’s play-offs is nothing to be sniffed at but Swindon Supermarine boss Dave Webb reckons his team could easily have captured the whole caboodle.

Marine travelled to Evesham United last Tuesday and dispatched the Worcestershire outfit courtesy of Ollie Bailey’s last-ditch effort and then on Saturday, they picked up a respectable point by drawing 1-1 at Larkhall Athletic.

Webb’s men took the lead 18 minutes in at Plain Ham as a Chris Taylor free-kick was bundled in from close range, with Jacob Davidge, Ryan Stanners and Luke Hopper all claiming the final touch, but Larkhall snatched a share of the spoils when Matt Thorne’s strike agonisingly deflected into the net.

“Going to Evesham and Larkhall – those are two very tough away games – and coming back with four points; I would have been very happy with that at the start of the week,” said chief Webb.

“Hand on heart, I am happy, but with the chances we had, we know that we could have won the game on Saturday.

“I think the players knew in the dressing room afterwards that they could have won the game and that we’d paid the penalty for not getting that valuable second goal after we went ahead.

“It was a great delivery whipped in by Chrissy Taylor and Jacob Davidge, Ryan Stanners and Luke Hopper have all said that they got the last touch – I think the dubious goals panel will have to look at that one.

“We were on top in the game after that but the key thing was that we didn’t get that second goal and then they’ve had a shot that’s deflected off Ryan O’Hara and looped into the opposite corner to where Matt Bulman was standing.”

The Marine manager added: “Ten points from five games is a good start to the season. I know people looked at the Bishops Cleeve game (a 2-1 loss on August 15) as a blip but they went and beat Yate after that.

“I think that loss might be a good thing for us because it shows the players how difficult every game is and that any team can cause you problems if you don’t perform.”

Defender Ash Taylor and winger Josh Morse were both ruled out with injury for Saturday’s trip to Larkhall but Webb is hopeful that the pair will return for next Friday night’s FA Cup preliminary round trip to Wessex League Sholing (kick-off 7.45pm).
