CHESHAM United may have pulled off one of the big shocks in the first round of the FA Cup last weekend but that hasn’t stopped Swindon Supermarine boss Dave Webb dreaming of his own cup upset.

The Southern League Premier Division Generals claimed the scalp of League Two side Bristol Rovers and, boasting the likes of former Premier League striker Barry Hayles, now 43, in their squad, will be looking to avoid their own banana skin when they travel to the Webb’s Wood in the FA Trophy.

“If you look at the FA Cup result, where they have gone to Bristol Rovers and won, then it is a fantastic opportunity for us to play against a team who have had a great win,” said Webb.

“We know we will have to play to our true potential and hope they have a bad day but you see it in all cup competitions. I am sure their manager will refocus their minds after the elation of last weekend and they will want to improve on their league position.

“The underdog has a chance and we have to believe we can win the game and approach it in a positive manner at home.

“We’re all looking forward to it and with the likes of Barry Hayles, who probably won’t even start; that shows the quality they have got.”

Webb still recalls when he made the semi-finals of the same competition when he was a player with Gloucester City during their 1996-97 campaign.

His side lost to Dagenham and Redbridge in a replay after being two minutes away from the final before letting in a late goal and going on to lose 2-1.

He now wants his players to experience a similar run and knows with a bit of luck, they can upset the odds.

“The competition is a great thing to be in,” he added. “We’re in round two and we win this one and Conference clubs come in.

“We’re desperate to progress and we want to put in a real good show and stay with them and show them that we are a good side as well.

“This competition now is our distraction. We want to stay in this competition as long as we can so the boys can get away from the hard work that is every week in our league.

“I’ve got all the way nearly as a player, losing in the semi-final, and I will never forget it and that is what I want my players to experience.

“You can go a long way in this competition with a little bit of luck along the way.”
