DAVE Webb is aiming to add more firepower to his Swindon Supermarine armoury by bringing striker Josh Parsons back to the club.

After leaving Cirencester Town earlier this month, Parsons, who hit 29 goals for Marine in the 2013-2014 campaign, was at the Webb’s Wood Stadium for Saturday’s 3-2 FA Trophy defeat to Chesham United as he closes in on a third spell with the South Marston side.

Marine still need to get the required paperwork over the line but with Parsons set to follow in the footsteps of Ashley Edenborough in returning to the Webb’s Wood, manager Webb is hoping to keep his attacking options as fresh and potent as ever.

“We’re hoping to get that done. He’s obviously still registered with Cirencester at the moment and we’re just trying to get that paperwork through. Hopefully he’ll be on board for next week,” said the Marine chief.

“We want to try and get as many good players here as we can. I think Josh is a very talented player and will add something to this group. We’re really pleased.

“Josh is a Swindon-based player and we always want to bring in as many good players as we can.

“When we know he was available, we were desperate to get him. I think Josh will add a different dimension to our attacking options.”

Despite a spirited display against opposition from the league above, Marine were unable to get the better of FA Cup heroes Chesham in the second round proper of the Trophy.

The away side were welcomed on to the pitch with a guard of honour in tribute to their 1-0 victory over League Two Bristol Rovers last weekend, which was followed by a minute’s silence to mourn the people who lost their lives in Friday night’s atrocities in Paris.

When proceedings go under way, Marine got themselves into the lead just past the quarter-hour mark, young full-back Luke Matthews allowed too much space by the Generals defence as he nodded home with ease from Ryan O’Hara’s set-piece delivery.

But it didn’t take long for Chesham to get back on level terms, with Toby Little lashing in a fine left-footed strike from the edge of the area, which bounced into the net off the right upright.

After both left-backs had netted, it was the turn of a midfielder to threaten next, Joe Shepherd sweeping an effort not far wide from a Kyle Lapham’s cross, but the visitors made it 2-1 as George Fenton stooped low to head in from Little’s corner.

Ashley Edenborough had a shot turned around the post by Generals goalie Shane Gore whilst Ryan Stanners volleyed just past the post as Marine looked to overturn the deficit late in the first half whilst there was still time for Matt Bulman to keep out Kelvin Bossman’s fine effort at the other end.

In the second period, Stanners tested Gore as the home side grew into the ascendancy but Marine couldn’t find a goal and with just over 20 minutes to go, Chesham netted their third as the impressive Brad Wadkins had two shots charged down but was able to cut the call back for fellow striker Bossman to blast home into an empty net.

Webb’ men made things interesting 10 minutes from time when substitute Luke Hopper reduced the deficit to a single goal but time ran out as the Generals marched on.

Webb added: “I thought we showed a lot of character and a lot of togetherness. I think we acquitted ourselves really well and I think we are slightly unfortunate that we haven’t got a replay out of it.

“We need to use the spirit, togetherness and effort in the league. It was nice to see our supporters applauding our lads off.”
