DJC Marlborough were able to enjoy a team night out with an extra spring in their step on Saturday after claiming a dramatic cup victory over their local rivals.

In one of just a handful of fixtures to escape the elements in the Swindon & District League last weekend, Marlborough came back from two goals down to beat Division One outfit Ramsbury 3-2 at St John’s School, progressing into the quarter-finals of the George Thomas/Don Rogers Cup.

Michael Burns got Marlborough’s comeback up and running, Adam Bukowski levelled matters, and Anthony Duckett popped up with a late winner to hand his team cause for a knees up.

“We’d arranged a team night out for a bit of bonding a while ago and when we found out we’d be playing Ramsbury in the cup, we thought that was great,” said manager Ian Bevan.

“They’re our local rivals. We usually play a friendly against them but we don’t play them in a proper game very often because they’re in the league below us.

“I went down to the ground to check the pitch in the morning but it was playable. The weather didn’t make it easy and it was a typical local derby.

“When we got it back to 2-1, I think Ramsbury were happy to try and keep it at 2-1 but we kept going and managed to stop it going to extra-time when we scored the winner with about five minutes to go.”

Meanwhile, Sport 4 Pinehurst joined Marlborough in the quarter-finals following their 4-1 win over North Swindon WMC. Jake Robertson and Jonathan Peachey both netted braces for the victors.

KS Miltax’s second round Advertiser Cup clash with Swindon Spitfires got under way but was abandoned at half-time due to a waterlogged pitch, while Village Inn’s tie with Old Town United was postponed.

But Swindon Centurians did get a run-out in Division One and cut the gap on league leaders Spitfires after they beat R&D United 10-1.

Nick Frost starred with four goals, while Gareth Walton, Seth Palmer, Marc Connelly, Allan Hawthorn and Ricky Hewitson, who also missed a penalty, all got in on the act.
