ROYAL Wootton Bassett Town striker Steve Robertson says that he and his team-mates have thrashed things out behind closed doors as they look to arrest their porous form.

Last weekend, Bassett suffered a 7-1 humbling on the road at Ardley United, who are two places below them in the Premier Division table, and that thumping defeat came less than three weeks after Paul Braithwaite’s side were embarrassed 8-0 at local rivals Highworth Town, who have no game this Saturday.

Robertson, who has captained Bassett in recent weeks during the absence of injured regular skipper Steve Yeardley, is now hoping that all of his team-mates are now singing off the same hymn sheet and are determined to show pride in their efforts going forward, rather than ‘downing tools’ when the going gets tough.

“I’ve had better weekends than last weekend,” said Robertson.

“It was a bad defeat and we all had a sit down in training and a strong word amongst ourselves because things need to change.

“It wasn’t like last weekend was the first time. We had another heavy defeat a few weeks before that and people can’t just down tools and give up when we’ve conceded a few goals.

“We all want to get behind the club and that’s what we’ll be trying to do now.

“Hopefully, we’ve sorted out the problems and in the two games in between those two big losses, we actually played alright.”

Bassett go looking to banish the spectre of their Ardley hammering when they host Oxford City Nomads tomorrow but with the visitors acting as the second team to National League outfit Oxford City, Robertson knows to expect the unexpected.

He said: “I’ve played against them four or five times and they could have players from their first team in the squad this weekend.

“They could be really, really good, or just as good as they normally are. We have to be ready for that but hopefully we can get a good result for ourselves.”
