SWINDON Centurians manager Scott Canniford is hoping that his team can carry on defying their seemingly leaky back-line as they chase Division One leaders Swindon Spitfires.

Centurians were back in action for the first time since December 5 last weekend and despite continuing to ship goals, they maintained their unbeaten season with a 5-2 victory over Ramsbury.

Gareth Walton netted a brace, whilst goals from Carl Wheeler, Gary Donnelly and a Ramsbury own goal made up Centurians’ tally.

“It’s been an ongoing thing – every time we play, other teams seem to score from every shot that they have,” said Canniford.

“It happened again last weekend. They (Ramsbury) had two shots and scored from them both.

“I’m racking my brain at the moment to figure out how to stop it happening. We can’t really put two people in goal.

“We’re doing well, though, especially for a bunch of oldies. Everyone in our team is over 35 and we’re playing against 18, 19 or 25-year-olds every week; some fit lads.

“It was our first game for a little while on the weekend and it was a hard-fought game but it was good to get back to winning ways after a couple of disappointing draws (both against Sport 4 Pinehurst).

“I also thought that Carl Wheeler was absolutely superb. He was everywhere and the goal he scored, with was a strike from 25 yards, was brilliant.”

Centurians moved up to second in the Division One table, six points behind Spitfires, who are also yet to taste defeat in the league this season.

Elsewhere, Lee Godwin and Tom Tuck both netted hat-tricks as Core Construction sent R&D United back to the drawing board, Floyd Garrett and Neil Coles also getting on the scoresheet in their 8-0 romp, whilst Moredon and Sport 4 Pinehurst played out a 2-2 stalemate.

In the Premier Division, leaders Tawny Owl dispatched Lower Stratton 3-1, Jack Allan adding to Jamie Sheppard’s brace, whilst second-placed Avtar Construction kept on their heels.

Scott Price, Blaine Fitzgerald and Peter Smith all netted as Avtar beat Spectrum 3-0, whilst mid-table KS MIltax beat Village Inn 6-3.
