TROWBRIDGE Wanderers manager John Phillips was relieved that his team hit back to rescue a point at Devizes Town Reserves on Saturday.

In one of just three matches to take place in the Wiltshire League Premier Division, Wanderers went ahead in the first half through Otis Young, who dusted himself down before firing home from the penalty spot after being fouled in the area.

Phillips’ men were hit with a quick-fire double-salvo early in the second period as Devizes turned the game on its head but Mark Robinson struck to ensure that the visitors snatched a 2-2 draw at Nursteed Road.

“Looking at the respective positions of the two teams in the table, you would have expected us to have the edge, but it was a pretty even game,” said the Wanderers boss.

“We were a goal up at half-time through a penalty but then Devizes have scored twice in the space of six minutes at the start of the second half and I was really disappointed with that.

“Fair play to the character shown by our lads because they’ve got themselves an equaliser and then both teams have had chances to win it.

“But I felt that at half-time, we should have been two or three goals up and we paid the penalty for that.”

Wanderers are currently sixth in the table, nine points behind second-placed Shrewton United but with three matches in hand.

Phillips added: “We’ve still got to play Malmesbury twice and also Melksham, so things are in our hands.

“We’ve got two winnable games before the end of the month – we go to Wootton Bassett and play Sarum Youth, who are bottom of the table – so hopefully we can increase our position.”

Elsewhere, Wilts Calne Town and Wroughton drew 1-1 whilst Royal Wootton Bassett Town were beaten 3-2 at home by Ludgershall Sports.
