MICHAEL McNally hopes Shrivenham can put more distance between themselves and the bottom of the table this weekend when they play host to fellow strugglers Tytherington Rocks.

A 1-1 draw at Purton last Saturday saw McNally’s men haul themselves off the foot of the standings, with New College dropping to the bottom on 10 points, one fewer than both Shrivvy and Tytherington.

Shrivenham have won just three league games so far this term and McNally knows just how important claiming another against Tytherington could be.

“We were supposed to play New College in midweek but that got postponed, which was a shame, so we’re just hopeful that we can get the game on,” said McNally.

“We are looking forward to playing Tytherington, they are not a bad side. I think their goalkeeper got man of the match when we played them before and it finished 0-0, so we are looking to try to put that right, if we can.

“It’s a six-pointer, all the lads know the incentive of it. All we can do is try to get a positive result.”

The draw at Purton ended a three-match losing streak for Shrivvy, although the previous two defeats were only by the odd goal.

McNally reckons his team have been performing better than results have suggested and, although their lowly league position is not ideal, insisted there is far from a crisis at Barrington Park.

“In the last three months we haven’t been that far away,” said McNally.

“We have played good football but we just lack a little bit of belief and in front of goal we haven’t been as clinical as maybe some of the other teams have.

“If we’d taken our chances then results could easily have been different and we would maybe be up in fourth or fifth.”

“If we weren’t creating those chances or playing good football, then we’d have major problems but the truth is, we don’t.”

Lee Brown is set to miss the match against Tytherington, while Jack Pedder will undergo a fitness test ahead of the game.

New College will be looking to capitalise should Shrivvy slip up, although they face a tough test away at third-placed Carterton.
