SWINDON Spitfires U15s girls went down to a 2-0 defeat on the road at Sarum.

Spits started the game strongly and a Shannon King corner was met by Lucy Scrannage, whose volley struck the crossbar inside the opening two minutes.

The visitors were causing Sarum plenty of problems at the back but were denied the opening goal by some determined defending.

When they did manage to break through, the home goalkeeper came to her side’s rescue.

Sarum began to get into the game more and Spitfires fell behind after 15 minutes when they failed to clear their lines properly.

The game remained wide open and a run down the left from Lauryn Isaac saw her beat her marker and send in a cross for Lani Dickinson, whose shot beat the keeper but was stopped on the line by a defender’s hand.

Scrannage stepped up to take the resulting penalty but saw it well saved by the keeper.

The miss seemed to affect Spits as they retreated into their shells and never got back got into the game.

The second half did not start well for the visitors, with Catherine, who had been outstanding in the first half, having to come off because of illness, forcing a reshuffle.

Sarum were able to double their lead with 15 minutes left when they were awarded a free-kick on the edge of the box. The ball flew over the wall and into the top corner, giving goalkeeper Carla Heaton no chance.

The home side could have pulled further clear before the final whistle when they were also awarded a penalty but Heaton got down well to smother the ball and make a good save.

The U13s fared much better and were 6-0 winners away at Ashton Keynes. Kimberly Jackson led the way with a hat-trick, Kayleigh Stanley struck twice and Shannon Whitely was also on target.
