SWINDON Supermarine showed a resilient side to their game as they made the most of slim pickings to record a 1-0 away win.

Dave Webb’s side travelled to Slimbridge and were fortunate to see the game go ahead after a prolonged period of rain.

Both sides struggled with the heavy underfoot conditions and Sam Morris had the best chance for the visitors as the first half finished goalless.

Supermarine’s winner came moments after half time when they broke and Josh Morse finished well with his right foot after his first effort was blocked on his favourable left side.

“Conditions were extremely difficult for both sides which made the game even more difficult for us, but I think our win was based on a real solid defensive foundation,” said Webb.

“From Harvey (Rivers) in goal through the back four, they were all tremendous.

“Anything that was put into a dangerous area they dealt with.

“I just hoped we would show that bit of quality in the final third to get a gaol and maybe a second goal.

“They (Slimbridge) threw everything at us in the last 15 to 20 minutes. They had a front four and were throwing the centre half up and really went to try and get something out of the game.

“It was just unfortunate that we didn’t get our second goal having had a couple of chances.

“I couldn’t have asked for any more from the players today, every single one of them.

“I know I said the defensive foundation, you needed to be strong defensively on a very heavy pitch, but offensively we were very good too at times.”

The win stretched Supermarine’s unbeaten run to 14 games and, with Cinderford Town’s game with Taunton Town postponed, Webb’s side now sit just three points off the summit of the Southern League Division One South & West League table.

“I’m just over the moon that we have managed to get another win and another three points to keep the run going,” he added.

“It was a real scrap but I think the game shows how resilient we have come and we certainly know how to go about managing a game better than we may have done in the past.

“We’re grinding out those results that are vitally important given our position.

“We 14 unbeaten – seven wins, three draws – you can’t ask much more of any team to be putting something like that together at such a crucial stage of the season.”
