THERE was some long-awaited cheer for Wilts Calne Town last weekend as they finally racked up their second win of the season in the Wiltshire League Premier Division.

Heading in to Saturday’s clash with Malmesbury Victoria at Bremhill View, Calne had only tasted victory once in 18 attempts – their sole win was a 5-2 triumph over winless basement boys Sarum Youth on October 17 last year.

However, they finally bucked the trend last weekend, coming out on the right side of a 3-2 thriller against the Vics, who ended the afternoon with 10 men.

After the visitors were off-target a clutch of times early on, Calne broke on the counter-attack with 29 minutes on the clock and Robbie Burton headed the ball on for Jake Brand to fire the hosts into the lead.

After Malmesbury continued to fail to find a way past Stuart Windsor, who usually plays as a striker for Calne’s first team, the home team made it 2-0 on the break in the second period, Adam Mitchell evading two defenders before rolling the ball under goalie Ant Brown.

Then, in the 65th minute, Calne made it 3-0 as Ben Redford missed out a host of players from both teams as he lobbed the ball net the net from 25 yards.

But the Vics launched their fightback five minutes later, scrambling the ball home from close-range to convert from a free-kick.

Tempers frayed 10 minutes from time after a foul committed by a Malmesbury player and shortly afterwards, the visitors’ Danny Cooke was sent off for a second bookable offence.

However, there was still time for the Vics to notch again to set up a tense finale, but Calne held on to get the monkey off their back.

Elsewhere, Wroughton were unable to prevent Shrewton United from going to the top of the table as they were beaten 2-1 at home whilst Melksham Town Reserves moved into second place after their 2-0 win over Chippenham Park Development.

Trowbridge Wanderers slipped up as they drew 1-1 at winless Sarum Youth, Corsham Town Reserves beat Devizes Town Reserves 2-0 and the spoils were shared between Marlborough Town and Royal Wootton Bassett Town Reserves as they played out a 2-2 stalemate.

Vale of Pewsey were thrashed 4-0 by Ludgershall Sports.
