SWINDON Supermarine were able to take advantage of Winchester City not playing to climb back into third spot in Southern League Division One South & West with a 3-2 victory at home to Mangotsfield United.

Marine fell behind in the ninth minute when a free-kick from the right caused trouble at the back post and the loose ball was pounced on by Alfie Kilgour to fire past Harvey Rivers.

The hosts were back on level terms in the 14th minute after Josh Parsons saw his effort blocked by Kyle Phillips only to fall to Josh Morse to score his third goal in five games.

Supermarine were the better of the two sides in the second half and took the lead in the 66th minute when Connor Thompson got across the front post to head home Ryan Stanners’ cross.

Substitute Connor Waldon made an impact when he was brought on for the last 20 minutes and his good work played in Stanners in 12 minutes from time to fire home from the edge of the box.

Mangotsfield were gifted a penalty in the first minute of added on time, which was dispatched by Ben Banment but it was too late to mount a comeback.

“Tonight was all about a result and that is what it is, a win,” said manager Dave Webb.

“We’ve been playing Saturday, Tuesday for the last three weeks and this is the sixth of that sequence and we’ve got a few lads who are fatigued and tired.

“Sometimes you have to win when you are not at your real best.

“We can be a lot better but it is all about that win.

“For me the third goal is what we needed and for the second game in a row they are saying it is a soft penalty again.

“If we hadn’t got that third goal and Connor Waldon hadn’t come on and done well in the last 20 minutes and set up Ryan Stanners for the third goal we would be talking about two points we managed to let slip again.

“It was all about the result tonight and those players are tired but we know it is our last mid-week game until April so we can get back to getting some rest and pick up the points we need.

“That is one down out of the 10 and it isn’t about how you win them it is just about getting the three points and I am pleased.”
