FAIRFORD Sunday blew the Division Two title race wide open with a stunning 5-0 demolition of leaders West Swindon Wanderers.

Wanderers had lost just once in the league previously this term but have now had their gap at the top cut to a single point following a 3-0 win for Shrivenham Sunday against Wanborough.

Paddy Cripps and Sam Ockwell both struck braces for Fairford, while Adam Devine completed the rout from the penalty spot.

Although the result may come as a surprise to many, Fairford boss Dave Shephard said the winning margin could have been even more.

“We were 2-0 up at half-time and we knew they were going to come at us in the second half as they are top of the league and don’t like being behind,” said Shephard.

“We kept the pressure up and after the third goal went in their heads went down.

“I don’t want to be unfair but for a team top of the league, they weren’t even close to us.”

The result formed a double celebration for Fairford and gave club stalwart Bob Livingstone a fitting send off after he announced his decision to retire at the end of the season following the match.

Shephard added: “If it wasn’t for Bob the team would have died years ago. He’s been the backbone of the club since day one.”

Third-placed G Power Solutions are now within five points of top spot after a 3-1 victory away at Rodbourne Real.

Elsewhere, FC Walcot closed the gap on Division One leaders Greyhound with a 6-3 success at home to AFC Gas. They and Deers Leap, who won 3-2 at KC Globe, are three points behind but Greyhound have played fewer games than both.

DPR took another step towards the Division 3 title when they scored a perfect 10 against Chiseldon Sunday, who failed to register a reply.

Bottom side AFC Wedge claimed just a second league win of the season by beating Smart Movers 8-3 and are now only propping up the table on goal difference. DH Fitness were 5-2 winners at home to Moovahome and Uruguay Sociedad beat Rudis 4-3.

Fox & Hounds Freshbrook moved six points clear at the summit in Division Four with a 6-1 success over PSV Swindon, with Croft Junior up to third after beating Nationwide 5-3.

AFC Cricklade are the new leaders in Division Five thanks to a 3-1 success over Northern Lights. Athletico Marlborough matched that scoreline against Highworth Town Sunday, Save on Tyres beat Cricklade Park Rangers 4-1 and Purton Red House edged to a 2-1 win over FC Abbey Meads Development.

Woodlands Edge and Haydon will contest the final of the Bunny Uzzell Memorial Shield after beating FS Swindon and Eldene in the semis, while the SSFL Chairman’s Trophy will be between Willowgreen Hotspur and Marlborough Town Casuals after wins over AFC Moonrakers and The Windmill respectively.
