DAVE Webb is hoping Swindon Supermarine’s renowned powers of recovery will come to the fore again as the Division One South & West promotion race builds to a thrilling climax.

Marine’s four-match winning streak came to a halt at Mangotsfield on Easter Monday, slipping them to the final play-off spot in fifth but still just five points off the league summit.

Webb’s men have only failed to bounce back from defeat with a victory twice all season and he is counting on that durability to see them through the final five matches of the campaign, cementing their play-off place as quickly as possible while keeping the door ajar to a shot at the title itself in the last few weeks.

Marine face another huge test of those credentials as they head to second-placed Cinderford Town tomorrow but despite the obvious disappointment of Monday’s reverse, the manager insists no one following their fortunes should lose sight of the bigger picture.

“People need to look at what we have achieved this season and although Monday was disappointing, that is still only three defeats in 23 games,’’ said Webb.

“We didn’t reach the sorts of levels that we have this season (against Mangotsfield), although we didn’t have some chances, especially in the first half. We just couldn’t break them down, but that’s football and sometimes that happens.

“The team has always shown a good recovery after losing games so we need to do that again.

“We’re aware we still need points to secure a play-off spot.’’ Chris Taylor and Kyle Lapham return from holiday to face the Foresters, although Joe Shepherd will be unavailable for the next three matches, attending a family wedding abroad.

Ryan Morgan’s back, which broke down again last weekend, will be assessed before tomorrow as will Ross Adams’ back problem.

Webb reckons his feeling that the destination of the title will not be decided until the final game of the season may be about to come to fruition, adding: “I always said it would go all the way and it’s looking like it won’t be far off that.

“We still have 15 points to play for and a lot can change quickly. I’m confident that with the players we have and the player returning will strengthen us for the last few games.’’
