IF THE stars align, Swindon Supermarine could clinch their highest points total in recent years in Southern League Division One South & West – and a play-off berth in the process – but manager Dave Webb is after a whole lot more.

Victory over Yate Town this weekend would take Marine to 83 points, two ahead of their total of 81 accrued in the 2012-13 campaign, and if both Evesham United and Shortwood United fail to win, Webb’s men will be guaranteed a top-five finish with two games to go.

But even if things go the way of his team, the Webb’s Wood Stadium chief wouldn’t want his charges to put their feet up ahead of the play-offs and would urge Marine to aim to finish as high up the table as possible in order to secure the advantage of a home tie.

“We’re back at the Webb’s Wood this Saturday and the game against Yate is one that we must win but even if we do that and get a play-off spot, we could get 89 points and that’s what we’ll be going for,” said Webb, whose team claimed a 1-0 win at Bishops Cleeve on Tuesday night.

“On Tuesday, the application from the lads to bounce back from two defeats was superb because Bishops Cleeve is a very tough place to go.

“We’re nearly there. The players understand what they need to do and we’ll keep going until the end of the season.

“89 points would be better than the 81 we got in 2012-2013 or the 79 we got in 2013-2014 and we’ve got three tough games left but we want to try and finish as high up the table as we can – third, if possible – to try and get a home tie in the play-offs.

“Evesham and Winchester have still got to go to Bishops Cleeve and there’s still a lot that can happen between now and the end of the season.

“Yate have fallen away a little bit recently. They’re having a bit of a transitional phase because of a change of manager but I’m sure that Darren (Edwards) is trying to get in as many good players as possible and they’ll still be a dangerous team.”

Joe Shepherd is unavailable for Saturday’s Yate clash but Ryan O’Hara, Ryan Stanners and Tyron Leigh will be aiming to shake off illness.

Ryan Morgan returned to training last night after a back problem alongside goalkeeper Matt Bulman, who has been out since December with a knee injury.

Webb admitted: “We’ve still got Harvey Rivers but hopefully Matt Bulman will play a part in our remaining games.

“He’s a fantastic goalkeeper and he’s probably been one of our best players, if not our best player, this season.”
