SWINDON Supermarine are a win away from clinching a play-off spot following their 2-0 success at home to Yate Town.

However, with Evesham United, who remain a place outside the promotion picture with a game in hand over Dave Webb’s side, completing a 5-0 away win over Burnham, Marine’s end-of-season fate is still in the balance with two games remaining.

Bradley Gray opened the scoring for the hosts in the 14th minute before Connor Thompson doubled their advantage before the break to complete a straightforward victory.

“We needed to make sure that we won the game and we started quite brightly,” said Webb.

“We scored a very good goal. It was good build-up from Josh Parsons and Connor Thompson to play in Bradley Gray.

“We got 1-0 up and then Yate really came into the game and probably dominated the next 20 minutes and had a couple of chances of their own.

“Then we have probably scored one of our best goals of the season through Connor Thompson.

“It was a great team goal. The passing and a great interchange between Josh Parsons and Connor was great and he has finished it brilliantly.

“Going in two up at half-time settled us down a little bit.

“At this stage of the season, it is not how you win. It is just about winning and we have managed to do that twice this week with two clean sheets.

“Clean sheets are imperative at this time of the season for us. We set the team up in a way that we didn’t want to concede and it worked brilliantly.”

Webb knows a win away to AFC Totton next Saturday will secure Marine's place in the play-offs but hopes that Evesham will slip up against Bishops Cleeve on Tuesday night to make their lives easier.

“We’re not even guaranteed play-offs at the moment, so the win was vital for us,” he added.

“I’m really pleased for the club and pleased for the players and it is two games to go and we already have 83 points – our biggest total of points since I have been manager.

“To get the total of points we have got is fantastic but it just shows you how competitive the league has been this season, with Evesham still breathing down our necks going into our final two games.

“We need to get one more win to be sure, unless Evesham drop some points.

“We have got to try and take care of that next win next weekend at Totton and if we can do that, then we are guaranteed a spot and guaranteed a shot at promotion, which was always our ambition for the season.

“I’d be more pleased if Evesham lose at Bishops Cleeve on Tuesday.”
