THE fate of Fairford Town’s season is now firmly out of their hands after they brought the curtain down on their campaign with a 3-0 win over Shortwood United Reserves.

A cross from the right-hand side by Luke Cordery was dummied by Danny Hale, with Jack Ellis on hand at the back post to notch the opening goal of the game with 32 minutes on the clock.

Fairford grabbed their second three minutes before the break with a shot from right-back Dan Hill deflected by Ryan Meredith and over Duane Portlock in the Shortwood goal.

In the second half, Fairford were able to add to their tally when Lee Smith squared for Ellis to notch his second of the game to secure the final-day win for the hosts.

“It is done now. We have done our bit as far as we are concerned now,” said manager Gareth Davies.

“It is just a case of finding out where we finish in the league but overall, I don’t think we could have done any more.

“The first half; I don’t know if we were a little bit nervous – we didn’t play to our strengths.

“The second half; I thought we were much better and I thought overall, we were worth our three (points).

“Jack Ellis scored another two, so he has come into a decent run of form and overall, we’ll take that result.”

With Cheltenham Saracens also winning 3-0 away to Clanfield, Davies knows his side have fallen just short of top spot in a season where they have occupied the summit for large periods.

However, having fought off relegation last season, it has been a dramatic turnaround for Fairford in a short space of time and Davies says his players should be proud of what they have achieved.

Carterton and Hook Norton, who sit third and fourth respectively in Division One West, still have games to play to determine Fairford’s final standing but Davies will not be paying attention to the results as he prepares his side for a Supplementary Challenge Cup semi-final against Headington Amateurs on Thursday night.

“Overall, the league is done and dusted and we have got to be pleased that we will finish in the top four,” he added.

“When you look back at the games we dropped points in, you look to see if we could have done more.

“After the season we had last year, overall, we can’t grumble, wherever we end up finishing.”
