NEW College assistant manager Matt Cosnett says that his club are hoping to develop off the field next season to continue giving their youngsters the best football education possible.

The student side signed off in style on Saturday, bringing a run of 12 straight defeats in Hellenic League Division One West to an end in their final outing of the season by thumping bottom-of-the-table Tytherington Rocks 5-1 at the Webb’s Wood Stadium.

College, who also hadn’t tasted victory in any competition since October 24, saw Jack Lowers’ first-half effort cancelled out by an Antonio Gerrish own goal but Gerrish made amends for his error by scoring in the correct net around the 65-minute mark, opening the floodgates in the process.

Ben Lodge, Kane Howcutt and Tom Johnston all got in on the action to hand College, who finish second-from-bottom, something to smile about in their last game and Cosnett is already looking towards next term.

“No disrespect to the Wiltshire League but we need to be in the Hellenic League to make sure that the lads that play for us are ready to go on and play first-team football elsewhere,” said the College assistant.

“Normally, guys are playing at this level when they’re 21 or 22 but we’ve had a lot of first-years come through this year and they’re getting that experience at 16 or 17, which can only help them.

“We want to try and develop things and we’re going to have a few changes next year, like moving to the rugby club’s pitch rather than playing on Supermarine’s, and we’re also hoping that a few third-years will stay with us.

“If we can get a good draw, we want to do well in the FA Vase, and we’re going to apply to get in the FA Cup again.”

Cosnett added: “It was a great result for us in our last game. We had to deal with conceding an equaliser but once we got back in front, Tytherington struggled and we managed to get a few goals, which is always nice to see.”

Elsewhere, Shrivenham brought the curtain down on their season with a 1-1 draw against near neighbours Clanfield.

Michael McNally’s side could finish as high as eighth in the table, having suffered just one defeat in their final 12 matches.
