HE’S far from certain that it would carry his team all the way to the Division One title but Swindon Centurians manager Scott Canniford says that his side are determined to attempt to finish the season unbeaten.

A battling 3-2 victory over Bassett Bulldogs maintained Centurians’ unblemished record on Saturday and brought them to within two points of Swindon Spitfires, although the league leaders have played a game less, with their clash with Chiseldon last weekend suffering a postponement.

Centurians have four games left to play, including a showdown with Spitfires on April 30, and although Canniford doesn’t expect their rivals to slip-up, he’s more than happy to see where an unbeaten season would take his side.

“We went on a long unbeaten run last year and then lost the last game of the season, so we’ve been unbeaten for the best part of over a year,” said the Centurians boss.

“Trying to finish the season unbeaten is our main goal now. That would be a real achievement.

“We’ll try and beat them but I don’t really think that Spitfires will drop points. They’ve got some very good players and if I was their manager, I’d be disappointed to not win the league.

“But we’ll wait and see what happens with them. I’m just taking the pressure off my boys and we’ll concentrate on what we’re doing – if we finish second, that would make it a good season too.”

After goals from Jason Hudson and Ricardo Serratore cancelled out Carl Wheeler’s opener for Centurians, they levelled matters through Paul Aust’s spot-kick before Seth Palmer popped up with the winning goal.

In the Premier Division, champions Tawny Owl thumped Village Inn 9-2 whilst Shield & Dagger romped to a 6-0 triumph over Lower Stratton.

Dave Toomey hit a hat-trick, Jake Johnson helped himself to a brace and Dave Coleman also got his name on the scoresheet.
