FAIRFORD Town manager Gareth Davies has his fingers crossed that his troops are champing at the bit to add a sparkling footnote to their season this weekend.

Davies’ men finished their Hellenic League Division One West campaign on April 9 but after overcoming Headington Amateurs in the semi-finals of the Supplementary Cup on April 14, they travel to Buckinghamshire tomorrow to take on Didcot Town Reserves in the final at Flackwell Heath’s Wilks Park.

Fairford’s players reported in for one final training session on Wednesday night after kicking their heels since their semi-final triumph and Davies is hoping he will be unleashing a team fully refreshed.

“We gave the lads some time off after the semi-final and I think that was a good move because it’s given them a chance to recover after a long, hard season, especially mentally,” said the Cinder Lane chief.

“They came in for training on Wednesday for a bit of a loosener and it seems like they were all buzzing and up for it.

“A few of them have playing Sunday League but I think they all know what it’s all about and they’ll be making sure that Saturday is the priority – we had one that had a game on Thursday and I tried my best to ban him from playing.

“I went to watch Didcot’s first-team play Supermarine last weekend, just to see what’s what because there may be some of those players playing on Saturday. But whoever we’re up against; we’ve just got to concentrate on our own game.

“People like to say that some cups are rubbish but when you’re in a final, you don’t think that at all.”

Fairford are unable to field the cup-tied Nathan Gambling whilst Sam Mepham is sidelined after having knee surgery and Scott Chilcott is banned after coming off the bench and being sent off in his side’s semi-final win over Headington.

Davies’ side finished fourth in the table and the Cinder Lane boss admits that he has no idea if his club have any chance of nicking promotion to the Premier Division.

He said: “We have absolutely no idea. I think that the club that won the Premier Division (Kidlington) have decided not to get promoted and we’re waiting to find out what the Southern League are doing.

“The problem is that some clubs want to get promoted and some don’t, and it will depend on what’s happening in the East division.

“Whatever happens, then we’ll put our heads together in the summer and improve the squad again.”
