NATHAN Good was the hero of the hour for Marlborough Town Casuals after his late strike saw them lift the SSFL Chairman’s Trophy at the weekend.

Good got the only goal of the game for Tom Thatcher’s side at the Gerrard Buxton Sports Ground as they stunned fellow Division Four side Willowgreen Hotspur, who sit top of the table.

“It was definitely deserved. We had most of the possession and most of the chances and we finally got ourselves in front in about the 80th minute,” said manager Thatcher.

“When you so play well and don’t manage to score, doubts do start to creep in a bit. It could have gone either way as they could easily have had a quick break and scored but luckily we stayed strong at the back and got the goal ourselves.

“It was a great result against the team who are top of the league. I think they might end up finishing second but they are still a good team.

“We had beaten them once already this season, 4-2 away from home, and we played them off the park at our place but still got beat, so we definitely thought we were capable of winning it.”

The victory continues the Casuals’ run of silverware as they were crowned Division Five champions in 2014-15 and are on course for another lofty league finish this term.

“We won our league last year, so we’re delighted to get another trophy for the club,” added Thatcher.

“We’ve got two league games left and if we win them both there’s a chance we can finish third in the table and if we do, it’ll be a great season.”

There were no league matches in the top two divisions at the weekend but DPR showed exactly why they have been crowned champions in Division Three by rounding off their campaign with a 10-3 drubbing of bottom side Smart Movers.

Uruguay Sociedad were unable to make sure of a runners-up finish as they were beaten 3-2 at Stratton Saints in their last game.

They can be overhauled by Woodlands Edge, who were 6-1 winners over Chiseldon Sunday and still have three matches to play.

Eldene triumphed 4-2 AFC Wedge in the division’s other match.

The only match in Division Four saw bottom side Coleshill Youth claim a rare win as they stunned third-in-the-table Croft Junior 5-2.

There was also just a single match in Division Five, which saw Athletico Marlborough claim a 2-0 success at home to Save on Tyres Athletic.
