DAVE Slattery was spot on for Tawny Owl as his extra-time penalty saw the Swindon & District League Premier Division champions complete the double with victory in the Swindon Advertiser Cup final today.

Slattery’s strike – his second penalty of the afternoon at the Gerrard Buxton Sports Ground in Royal Wootton Bassett – was enough to seal a 3-2 success over Avtar Construction, who played 70 of the 120 minutes a man light following the dismissal of David Burke early in the second half.

The defeat is a bitter blow for Avtar, who have to settle for a second runners-up spot behind Tawny Owl this season after also being beaten to the league title.

Kenny Hawkins gave Tawny Owl the lead five minutes before half-time but the scores were still level at the break as Lewis Walden equalised in stoppage time.

The game then took a decisive turn just a few minutes into the second period when Burke was deemed to have fouled Lewis Page in the box and referee Jeremy Moyes took exception to the Avtar defender’s remonstrations and showed him a straight red card.

Slattery slotted home the resulting spot-kick and that looked like deciding the contest until 15 minutes from time when Danny Cole brought 10-man Avtar level.

Avtar were then given a golden opportunity to win the cup when Walden was bundled over in the box by Richard Gee with just three minutes to go but Blaine Fitzgerald saw his penalty saved by Tawny Owl keeper Darren Coleman.

Extra-time was needed to decide the outcome and the numbers finally began to count for Tawny Owl, although they needed a penalty to see the job through as Slattery was brought down by Phil Mapstone and duly dusted himself off to net the winner from the spot.

Jason Hudson’s hat-trick had earlier helped 10-man Bassett Bulldogs down DJC Marlborough 4-2 to lift the George Thomas/Don Rogers Cup.

Hudson’s early strike had Division One side Bassett in front but Adam Bukowski restored parity before half-time.

A penalty from Michael Robinson looked to have handed Premier Division outfit Marlborough the initiative soon after the restart but from there, Bulldogs mounted a brave fightback.

Hudson got his second of the game before Bassett player-manager Colin Cochrane put his side ahead from the penalty spot.

Momentum looked like it would shift again shortly afterwards when Bulldogs were reduced to 10 men following a red card for Saul Charalambos but they kept their composure and Hudson wrapped up the win when he completed his treble late on.
