TAWNY Owl joint-manager Ajay Sahota has already set his sights on going one better next season after completing a league and cup double on Saturday.

Dave Slattery’s extra-time penalty saw the Swindon & District League Premier Division champions get their hands on more silverware with a 3-2 success over 10-man Avtar Construction in the Swindon Advertiser Cup final.

The defeat at the Gerrard Buxton Sports Ground in Royal Wootton Bassett means Avtar have to settle for a second runners-up spot behind Tawny Owl this season after also being beaten to the league title.

However, Sahota – who runs the team alongside Giovanni DeSando – says Tawny Owl cannot be totally satisfied with their season as they missed out on a clean sweep of the trophies available to them when they were knocked out of the Wiltshire Junior Cup at the quarter-final stage back in December.

Tawny Owl also completed the double two years ago under their previous guise as Fratellos before taking a season off but Sahota says the fact the treble has eluded them means there are no plans to step away again next term.

“We’ve got the double but the main priority at the start of the season was to do the treble,” said Sahota.

“The double’s great but it would have capped the season off even better if we’d got the treble but, unfortunately, it was one of those days where it was a cold day in December, where we couldn’t really get the 11 we wanted.

“We are still happy and we will go again and try to get the treble next year.”

Kenny Hawkins gave Tawny Owl the lead five minutes before half-time but the scores were still level at the break as Lewis Waldon equalised in stoppage time.

The game then took a decisive turn just a few minutes into the second period when Avtar’s David Burke was deemed to have fouled Lewis Page in the box and referee Jeremy Moyes took exception to the defender’s remonstrations and showed him a straight red card.

Slattery slotted home the resulting spot-kick and that looked like deciding the contest until 15 minutes from time when Danny Cole brought Avtar level.

Avtar were then given a golden opportunity to win the cup when Waldon was bundled over in the box by Richard Gee with just three minutes to go but Blaine Fitzgerald saw his penalty saved by Tawny Owl keeper Darren Coleman.

Extra-time was needed to decide the outcome and the numbers finally began to count for Tawny Owl, although they needed a penalty to see the job through as Slattery was brought down by Phil Mapstone and duly dusted himself off to net the winner from the spot.

“You think the worst when they get that late penalty. You think 'he’s got to stick it away'. He hasn’t, unluckily for him, but it’s more that Darren has saved it rather than he has missed it,” added Sahota.

“Fair play to them. It was a great performance from them with 10 men but Darren’s saved that penalty and we’ve gone on to win it, which we expected to do from the start.”
