SOUTHAMPTON Saints were on song at Swindon Spitfires’ six-a-side tournament as they brought the curtain down on the two-day event with victory in the ladies competition.

Twenty teams took part in Sunday’s showpiece event, with Spitfires represented by three teams.

Spits A came second in their group and reached the quarter-finals but lost out to eventual runners-up Poole Town in a really close encounter.

The tournament had started on Saturday morning with five U10s teams in action. Spitfires had one entry alongside some other local sides, as well as Stratford and Abergavenny Town Girls. Everyone taking part in the festival received a medal.

In the U11s section, eight teams were in action, including two from Spitfires. Spits Red got through to the semi-finals but lost out on penalties to Abergavenny Town Girls A. In the final, Melksham Town beat Abergavenny 1-0.

Spits had one of the six entries in the U12s competition and made it through to the final but were eventually beaten by Stratford.

The hosts did not get out of their group in the six-team U13s event, which was won by Bath City after they beat Tilehurst Panthers in the final.

Ten U14s teams took part in their age-group event, with Spits represented by two teams. Spits Red did not qualify for the semi-finals, but Spits Blue won their group and then beat Carterton 3-0 in the semis. They played Cardiff City in what was a very tough final, which saw the two teams level at 1-1 after extra time but Cardiff took the spoils in a penalty shoot-out.

Spitfires reached the semi-finals of the U16s tournament but they lost to Southampton Saints, who were eventually beaten by Cardiff in the final of the six-team event.
