SWINDON Supermarine manager Dave Webb was delighted after watching his side demolish Didcot Town in a 5-1 thumping.

Marine were boosted prior to the game by the arrival of goalkeeper Connor Johns, having struggled all week to find a replacement for club captain Matt Bulman, who has been ruled out for the season.

Striker Connor Waldon, 21, racked up an impressive first-half hat-trick to set the tone for the opening Southern League Division One South & West fixture.

The second half was more of the same as Callum Parsons and Lewis Thompson added to the scoreline for last season’s beaten play-off semi-finalists before Didcot scored a late consolation goal courtesy of ex-Marine man Ben Whitehead.

Manager Webb labelled the opening day result as ‘incredible’ but refuses to get carried away as he highlighted that his new-look side now need to follow up this result with another win.

“We only had four players who were with us last season available, so it has been a huge change in personnel,” he said.

“I couldn’t have asked for any more. Numbers one to 11 and then the subs; they were magnificent – it’s a fantastic start for us.

“Every player deserves a lot of credit but Connor Waldon getting a first-half hat-trick; I’m so pleased for him.

“He’s worked so hard and to see him play as well as that; it’s credit to him.

“It’s an incredible day for us. It was pleasing to see the team do so well. Our average age is 21 and we will probably sit top of the league (on Saturday night), but it is one game.

“There are a lot of positives but it counts for nothing. We need to take care of the next game and the next game.

“They should all be really proud. They were applauded off by our fans and that is nice to see but we can’t get carried away. If we don’t win the next game, it counts for nothing.

“When you lose some players in the summer, the likes of Chris Taylor and Ross Adams, you lose a lot of experience. A lot of people thought they were irreplaceable but we’ve shown you have to move on.”

Swindon Supermarine are in action again this week when they host AFC Totton on Tuesday night.
