LAST season’s Division One champions Swindon Spitfires got the new Swindon & District League campaign off to a flyer as they thrashed North Swindon 10-2 in the season opener on Saturday.

Phil Legace grabbed four, Sam Long helped himself to two and the rest were gathered by Nolan Paul, Stephen Hughes, Josh Archer and Pete Cox saw the hosts coast home.

Spitfires manager Barry Winslow was more than happy with how his team performed as they announced themselves in the Premier Division in style.

“It was a nice start, but I don’t expect it to be like that for the rest of the season. We played well and had a few players who stood out,” said the Spitfires’ boss.

“To get 10 was something special but apart from that, they all played really well and took their chances, I couldn’t have asked for more really.

“Phil (Legace) has been in great form, he’s been scoring in pre-season so it is good that he’s been able to carry that into the first game.”

Ramsbury kicked off with a five-star performance over Village Inn in a 5-2 victory thanks to a double from Max Derrick before Ashley Bowes, James Underwood and Peter Wheeler cemented the win.

Bassett Bulldogs also managed to grab an opening-day win in emphatic style as they thumped Sports Central 7-2.

A hat-trick from Ricardo Serratore set them on the right track with Craig Hunt, Nick Harrison, Josh Dimond and Colin Cochrane making up the total.

After their promotion last year, Tawny Owl made another strong start to their Premier Division season with a 3-1 win over Deers Leap.

In Division One, Lower Stratton put 11 past the New Town All Stars.

Rob Clark, Gavin Kay and Will Hooton added to Aaron Wilson’s treble and Jamie Saunders’ four-goal haul wrapped it up.

Ben Leonard’s hat-trick helped Wroughton Reserves to a 9-2 triumph over Chiseldon as Tom Miller grabbed two, with Nick Entwistle, Morgan Watts, Chris Sloley, Dan Harmer, Adam Blakeman and Jamie Bain all notching, plus an own goal from the hosts.
