MICHAEL Doughty has been a leading light for Swindon Town so far this season but ahead of tomorrow’s sell-out A420 derby at Oxford, the midfielder doesn’t believe that he’s currently going beyond the call of duty.

The Queens Park Rangers loanee has been involved in every league goal that his side have scored this season – he has scored three and assisted three of the six that Town have netted so far – but despite his obvious impact in recent weeks, Doughty doesn’t believe he’s worthy of too much special praise.

“Nath (Thompson) was telling me that I keep assisting but that’s my role in the team. I don’t see that as anything too special,” the Swindon man told BBC Wiltshire.

“As one of the midfielders, I need to create things for the strikers and the other players on the pitch and we’re all there to try and do our best for the club.

“I’m in a good vein of form as far as assists are concerned but we’re also doing brilliantly at the back and the strikers are working really hard, and the rest of the midfielders are doing well.

“So although those personal accolades are nice, they’re not the be-all and end-all.”

Doughty is anticipating a challenging local derby and believes that his team must improve upon their display against Peterborough last weekend if they’re to emerge with the spoils.

He added: “We, as players, know that for the fans, it’s a big game and I think, at this level, there’s no easy game, and we’ve got to improve from (last Saturday) if we’re going to go there and get three points.”

As well as forcing Peterborough’s Jack Baldwin to put past his own goalkeeper, Doughty also won and scored a penalty as Town twice came from behind to draw 2-2 at London Road last Saturday, and is all too happy to remain on spot-kick duty for as long as required.

Doughty said: “I had a chat with Ross, the assistant, and I wanted to add to my goal tally this year, so that’s quite a good way of being able to do it, and I’ve got confidence in myself that I can score from 12 yards.

“I don’t think it really matters who takes them but at the moment, I’m putting them in so why not let me keep having them?”
