JOVIAL Monk were the big winners over the weekend as they won 11-3 away at Moovahome in the League Cup.

The emphatic victory came after they lost their first game of the new Sunday League season away at AFC Gas, that game ending 2-1 to the hosts with Todd Mears getting the Jovial Monk goal.

It was a different story this week and they got off to a perfect start against Moovahome, when Richie Miles scored with less than 30 seconds on the clock.

Miles would go on to earn the man of the match award as he scored a total of five goals in a clinical performance.

His quintet, along with efforts from Mike Lenard, Daniel Bond, Maher Ali, Veejay Sammi, Karl Woodhams and Brandon Fenwick meant Shaun Smith’s men claimed a resounding 11-3 win.

After the break they produced a much-improved display as they began to gain some momentum.

The goals piled in for Jovial Monk in spite of Moovahome’s attempts, their second and third both coming from open play.

Overall, manager Shaun Smith was happy with how his side had reacted to last week’s defeat with an impressive win.

“It was a strong performance from ourselves, we got a goal within the first 30 seconds by Richie Myles and then killed it in the second half with an equally impressive performance,” said Smith.

“Especially Richie Miles, who was man of the match. His goals were first class and in my opinion he is a real credit to the team.

“I didn’t expect us to score 11, we thought we would win but not by that margin. It was a solid team performance, especially after our first game.

Manager Smith admitted he was hoping for a response from his players following their opening day 2-1 defeat to AFC Gas.

“We were trying to bounce back and I am happy with the response from the players, we went out to make a statement and I think we did,” he said.

“It’s very positive, I’m very happy with the lads, they’ve done themselves and the team proud, I couldn’t ask for more.

“It was definitely the reaction I was after, it’s a huge confidence boost, we have Greyhound next so it was just what we needed.”

Penhill United were another team who managed to record a big win in the cup, with a 7-2 win away at Woodlands Edge.

Division Two’s Chilli Shak improved on last week’s 9-2 win by keeping a clean sheet this week as they scored nine for the second time, their game at home to Sevenfield United ending 9-0.

Your Sport Swindon did however manage to reach double figures putting 10 past Chiseldon Sunday who could only manage three goals in a thrilling 10-3 result.

Cleeve Tech’s game also had a total of 10 goals, with the home side coming out on top against Willowgreen Hotspur 7-3.

There were also wins for Highworth Town Sunday, beating Swindon Athletic 6-0, Croft Junior came away from Paxton House United as 7-1 winners.

Purton Freshbrook secured a 4-1 home success over Save on Tyres Athletic and Swindon Rovers narrowly missed out as they lost 3-2 at home to Northern Lights.
