SHRIVENHAM manager Michael McNally has called for some of his players to take some responsibility after his side needed extra time and penalties to win at the weekend.

Levi Cox had put McNally’s on track for a win with an early goal in their Hellenic Challenge Cup tie with Woodley United but they needed spot-kicks to book their place in the next round.

After an woeful first half, McNally made some changes but were unable to get the win despite Kias Bonner-Shea being clean through at the end of normal time.

“To be honest we were abysmal in the first half, we got an early goal and then we just went to pot and they (Woodley United) came into the game,” said the Shrivenham manager “What I saw in the first half was just crazy but then we got them in at half time and I told them a few home truths.

“To be fair we stuck in and got better in the second half, we made a few substitutions and had the chance to win it in normal time.”

McNally admits his team won’t get away with such complacent performances for long and that his players need to start holding their hands up.

“I try to explain it to the lads, that we can’t keep just doing enough, especially in football because it will come back to bite you,” added McNally.

“Without a doubt the problem we have at the minute is a few of their attitudes aren’t right and there is complacency. A bit of desire is all I ask for.

“If they showed more desire, we’d be doing a lot better and it makes me mad. I try and speak to them as positive as I can but they have to start taking responsibility.

“I can only do so much, like setting up the team and doing the training, I can’t put on the shirt and perform, they’re the ones wearing it so have to take some responsibility.”

McNally will be hoping to see an improvement in his team when they travel to Abingdon United on Saturday.

In Division One West, Purton lost 1-0 against Cirencester Town Development.
