RICHARD Hunter was a much happier man at the weekend after watching his Royal Wootton Bassett Town side claim a 4-0 win over Oxford City Nomads.

Hunter had previously been disappointed with his team’s efforts after they lost 4-3 to Lydney Town on Tuesday night.

But the Bassett manager was more than satisified with how his side reacted to last week’s poor performance in the Premier Division.

“It was very pleasing - we played some very good football,” Hunter said. “Against Lydney, we were poor. We weren’t really at the races and the big thing was we conceded early goals.

“It was a little bit unlike us. I thrive to be very solid in defence and this time we kept a clean sheet and never really looked troubled.

“Oxford were a good team, they passed it round nicely but they never really penetrated our defence and we looked solid throughout.”

Bassett went into the break with a one-goal advantage when Steve Robertson scored his first of the game.

Robertson then doubled the lead with a lob early in the second half. From there it was plain sailing for Hunter’s troops as Nathan Hawkins added the third and Dale Richards sealed the win with Bassett’s fourth.

“We took our chances, it was four great goals, really. Steve Robertson got two cracking finishes either side of the half-time break,” said the Bassett boss.

“The second one was early in the second half and at 2-0, it was done and dusted, really. Oxford let their heads drop. “We didn’t take our foot off of the gas, we just kept going and then got two more goals after that, so 4-0 was very pleasing.”

Hunter praised his side for taking their chances, especially the in-form Robertson, who has now scored a total of nine league goals this term.

“He’s a great asset to have, his finishing is unbelievable. The key with him is he takes his chances, he doesn’t have many but when he gets them, he scores,” he added “The difference is others are chipping in now too. There are four or five now who chip in on the scoresheet regularly, which is really good because it takes the pressure off the strikers a little bit.”

Bassett will now be looking to build on their weekend win when they host bottom of the league Burnham next Saturday.

Highworth Town also managed to score four goals, but unlike Bassett they failed to claim a win as they drew 4-4 at home to Thame United.

Jeff Roberts’ side squandered a 3-0 lead as they claimed a point, Ryan Stanners, Kieron Gleed, Aysa Corrick and Ash Edenborough getting the goals.
