FOR NOW at least, Swindon Supermarine manager Dave Webb is holding fire on launching a recruitment drive to bolster his squad.

Last week, experienced forward Bradley Gray departed the Webbswood Stadium to join league rivals North Leigh, while on Wednesday, defender Jon Beeden stated his intention to return to Chippenham Town just 11 days after making the move back to Marine.

Conor Thompson and Zak Westlake remain unavailable for this weekend’s FA Trophy first qualifying round tie with Taunton Town following the former’s wedding in the United States and while admitting that he is thinking about dipping his toe into the transfer market, boss Webb doesn’t see an immediate need for reinforcements.

“We’re still without Conor Thompson and Zak Westlake – they’re not back until Monday,” said the Marine boss.

“We’ve obviously lost a few players over recent weeks so we might have to look at the market.

“I’m really pleased with the group I’ve got and there’s no immediate intentions for me to look at bringing anybody else in but obviously, it will be good when we get Conor and Zak back into the fold on Monday, which will take us back up to a good, strong squad again.”

Marine were beaten 2-1 by Taunton in last season’s Southern League Division One South & West play-off semi-finals but triumphed by the same scoreline when the two teams met in the league in South Marston last month.

However, the Peacocks have shown their pedigree this season by reaching the first round proper of the FA Cup, leaving Webb in no doubt as to the magnitude of his team’s Trophy tie.

Marine were humbled 3-0 by league leaders Hereford in midweek but whatever happens this weekend, the Webbswood chief believes that his players should remain proud of their efforts so far this season.

“They (Taunton) are a very good side and they’ll be there or thereabouts, I’m sure. We managed to play really well on the day when we played them before and get a 2-1 win,” said Webb.

“Taunton is always a nice place to go. The pitch is always in good nick and it’s a good football ground.

“They’re a good side and they’re well-supported, so there’ll be a good crowd there.

“We know what we’ll have to do to win that game. We want to progress in this competition if we can.

“This run of games was always going to culminate in these two games (against Hereford and Taunton) before we go and play Salisbury next Tuesday, who are another good team.

“We go there in good form and win or lose the game, we’re still looking down on a lot of good sides, so we need to take stock of that and make sure that we don’t get too negative.”
