SWINDON Town Ladies manager Steve Robertson refused to be too despondent despite seeing his side beaten by virtually the final kick of the game in yesterday’s 2-1 defeat at home to Lewes.

A wonder strike from a visiting player deep into stoppage time at Barrington Park in Shrivenham saw Town suffer an agonising late loss in the FA Women’s Premier League Southern Division.

Michelle Rich’s free-kick had given Town the lead just prior to the hour mark before Lewes hit back and although his team were unable to hold on for a share of the spoils, boss Robertson was eager to focus on the positives.

“The way we lost is disappointing but we haven’t taken a hiding, we’ve lost to a worldie with the last kick of the game,” said Robertson.

“It’s not nice to lose a match that way but the performance was top drawer and we are only one slice of luck away from getting the result that we deserve.

“It was a bit harsh as we were well worth a point but if we were getting beaten four or five nil every week, it would be a bit disheartening but we aren’t.

“It’s one we have to take on the chin but the performance was spot-on.

“That was the last team that we don’t know anything about, we have played everybody once now.

“We are competing with these teams and are holding our own, it’s just they are a little bit more streetwise than what we are at the moment and that’s to be expected considering that we stepped up a level.

“The performance was spot-on, every player played their part. We were a little bit unlucky to lose from the last kick of the game but we know a little bit about every team now so that will help us moving forwards, hopefully.”

Town now have a two-week wait for their next fixture and they are next in action when they travel to Portsmouth on November 13.
