ON the eve of one of the largest supermoon’s for nearly 70 years, perennial strugglers Northern Lights lit up the Swindon Sunday League skies with a 5-1 thrashing of Swindon Rovers.

Since forming three seasons ago, the Penhill Recreational Ground-based side, prior to this year, had only won one league match – they went through their entire first campaign without a win and conceded more than 100 goals.

This term in Division Five, Jason Smith’s men began with a victory – beating Swindon Rovers 3-2 away from home – and after thrashing the same side this weekend have propelled themselves up to fifth in the table with a second success of the season.

Elsewhere in the division, Purton Red House closed the gap on leaders Highworth Town, who drew 4-4 at Cricklade Park Rangers, to four points following their 4-0 win over Paxton House United, while Save on Tyres Athletic were also among the goals as they comfortably dispatched Sevenfields United 5-0.

Bottom-of-the-table PSV Swindon claimed their first Division Four win of the campaign with a 5-3 success at Nationwide thanks a hat-trick from Dan Radbourne, including two from the penalty spot, with strikes from Max Hackman and Tom Alder.

Manager Duane Maslen said: We’ve had a dreadful start to the season so this a massive relief.

“We have been struggling for injuries and now we have got everyone back.

“Hopefully we can all stay fit and start to move off the foot of the table.”

Leaders Coleshill Youth were held to a 3-3 by third-placed Swindon Athletic.

Elsewhere in the division, Chiseldon beat Gorsehill Borough 2-1 and Rudis returned home from Smart Movers with a 3-1 victory.

Deers Leap won the bottom of the table clash in Division One as they beat cellar-dwellers Jovial Monk 5-0.

Leaders AFC Gas were held to a goalless draw with Penhill United, while in the division’s other match, FC Walcot came out on top in a seven-goal thriller at Greyhound.

It was a case of lucky 13 for DPR as they added to Division Two basement boys Wanborough’s woes as they ran out 13-0 winners.

Leaders Cleeve Tech edged out Your Sport Swindon 3-2 and the other game to take place in the division, third-place DH Fitness beat Chilli Shak 3-1.

Purton Freshbrook were the big winners in Division Three as they returned home from Stratton Saints with a 7-1 victory thanks braces from Ashley Piotrowski and James Williams, while Chris Tewkesbury, Jon Lee and Lewis Blackmore were also on target.

Leaders Haydon suffered a 4-2 defeat at the hands on Willowgreen Hotspur, while Croft Junior were 6-2 winners at Eldene.

Division Three strugglers Crown progressed to the next round of the Bunny Uzzell Memorial Shield as they claimed a 3-1 preliminary round success over Division Four high-flyers Athletico Marlborough.
