AFTER getting back to winning ways in midweek, Dave Webb hopes that his Swindon Supermarine side can build on a promising display and begin to arrest their league form when they travel to Barnstaple Town tomorrow.

Marine impressed as they ended a five-match winless streak by beating near neighbours and fellow Southern League outfit Chippenham Town 2-1 in the Wiltshire Senior Cup on Tuesday night and they return to Division One South and West action with a trip to Devon.

Sixth-placed Marine haven’t won in the league since October 22 and Webb is in little doubt that his charges cannot allow for a case of ‘after the Lord Mayor’s Show’ to transpire when they meet Barnstaple.

“We want to stay in the cup competition and hopefully see how far we can go but the league is what we need some points in. Our league position has obviously faltered a little bit over recent weeks,” said the Webbswood Stadium chief.

“We’ve given the players a lot of information and it’s a bit of a relief for them, I suppose, to get the monkey off their back and get the win, and in the manner they’ve done it as well – that’s the most pleasing thing.

“But it’s one game. We need to take that into the next game now and get a league win, and that will be difficult down there but hopefully that will give them a real boost in the dressing room.

“If I could bottle the first 45 minutes and release that every week, I’d be very happy.

“We’ve shown that we are capable of it and we can do it, and hopefully that renews a little bit of self-belief in the players.

“They’re all good players, they’re a young group, they’re great to work with and they’ve got good togetherness – that takes you a long way.

“We were down there last weekend at Bideford and that’s much the same distance. It is a long way but again, I suppose one good thing is that it’ll be out of the way.

“We’ve played a lot of football through October and we’ve still got a lot to play in November.”

Josh Parsons opened the scoring from a free-kick against Chippenham but will miss the trip to Barnstaple and three more matches after that due to suspension, the striker having picked up his second red card of the season in last Saturday’s 4-0 loss at Bideford.

Boss Webb said: “It’s obviously disappointing that we lose Josh for four games.

“We had a good catch-up and talked about what I expect of him. He’s too good a player to be sat in the stand – he’ll be missed.”
