ROYAL Wootton Bassett Town Reserves put a poor run of form to bed in style as they completed a 5-1 win over Pewsey Vale Development.

Dave Terry’s side went into the game having won just once in their previous seven outings, a streak that left them sixth in the Wiltshire League and 10 points off top spot despite playing five games more.

However, against bottom-of-the-league Pewsey, Bassett got back to winning ways, although they did not have it all their own way.

The visitors took a first-half lead before braces from Carl Shepherd and Jack Sanderson added to a strike from Josh Bolton to secure the big win.

“We got beat at Bromham 6-2, which was a bit of a wake-up call to be honest,” said Terry.

“We had a good chat before our game at Marlborough and the attitude and commitment against them was much better.

“Going into this game, again playing some young lads with a couple of older heads in, the first half, we dominated it.

“We hit the post twice, the crossbar, had one cleared off the line and should have gone it four, possibly five up but went in one down.

“We had a little chat at half-time and it was a great response from the lads and we scored five.

“We did raise our game and the young lads are willing to learn and listen.”

Despite it only being December, Terry already has an eye on next season but hopes Saturday’s win will start a run that ensures this one is not wasted.

“Since the start of the season, we haven’t had a consistent team but we’re looking, after Christmas, building up to the end of the season, to put together a team for next season,” he added.

“I’m looking at the players and seeing who have got the attitude we want.

“Moving onto the Corsham game, we’re looking forward to it and hopefully we can get a couple of results going our way.”

Elsewhere, Ludgershall Sports completed a 2-0 win at home to Devizes Town Reserves, while Melksham Town Reserves edged a five-goal thriller as Marlborough Town missed the chance to go top outright as Shrewton United, Wroughton and Cricklade Town, all locked on 37 points, all didn’t play.

In the only other game of the weekend, Corsham Town Reserves and Wilts Calne Town shared the spoils after a 2-2 draw.
