ROYAL Wootton Bassett Town boss Rich Hunter was pleased to see his side pick themselves up from a defeat to brush aside Henley Town 4-0 on Saturday.

The Gerard Buxton Sports Ground side bowed out of the Wiltshire Senior Cup on Wednesday following a 2-0 loss to Toolstation Premier Division outfit Bradford Town.

But as Bassett returned to Hellenic League action on Saturday, there was no time to dwell on that disappointment as they made it four wins from four in the Premier Division.

Despite dominating from start to finish, Hunter’s team only went in at the break leading 1-0 following a 19th-minute strike from Steve Robertson.

Dale Richards doubled the lead early in the second half before Robertson bagged his second in the 70th minute and Ryan Withers came off the bench to round off the scoring and lift Bassett up to eighth in the table.

“Henley have got some nice players and they came and set-up quite defensively – it was more of a damage limitation for them,” Hunter said.

“We controlled the game and created lots of chances – we should have been four or five up at half-time.

“We got the second quite early in the second half and you could see the heads started to drop on the Henley players.”

Going into the match with Henley, Hunter told his players to try and put the Bradford loss behind them.

“You can’t let cup defeats affect you – you have to pick yourselves up and that is what we told the lads,” said Hunter.

“All you can do is go out there and give it your best. The confidence and spirit is good at the moment.

“That was a fourth win on the bounce in the league and we have got a virtually fully-fit squad to choose from.”

Meanwhile, fifth-placed Highworth Town saw their five-match winning run brought to an end as they were beaten 3-1 at home by Thatcham Town.

Josh Helford gave the visitors the lead before Kieron Gleed levelled matters for Jeff Roberts’ side.

Thatcham, who remained third in the Premier Division table following this success, bagged two quick goals early in the second half through Shane Cooper-Clark and James Tennant.
