SWINDON Supermarine started the new year in perfect fashion as they beat Wantage Town 5-0 away from home.

First-half goals from Connor Thompson, Josh Parsons and a Brad Hooper penalty put the visitors in control.

Callum Parsons added to the tally shortly after the break before Hooper netted his second from the spot with one of the last kicks of the game to wrap up the dominant performance.

On what was a heavy pitch in Oxfordshire, it was the hosts who took to the conditions underfoot better and in the seventh minute, Connor Johns had to be alert to a header from James Glover.

However, Supermarine grew into the game and were soon causing their hosts, who had set out to stifle Dave Webb’s side with a holding midfielder, problems.

In the 17th minute, Connor Waldon had a good chance to open the scoring as the ball fell to him in space in the box but he swiped at the ball and missed it completely.

It wasn’t long before the visitors were in front when Waldon again was found in the box and his effort, from point-blank range, was saved by Eddie Cavanagh, but the Wantage keeper could do little as the rebound deflected off Thompson and into the net.

Supermarine doubled their advantage in the 30th minute when they broke down the right from defending a free-kick deep in their own half.

Thompson attacked with pace before finding Waldon, who had looked to spend too much time on the ball before finding Josh Parsons in space at the back home to score.

Less than three minutes later and the game was all but put to bed when Thompson was felled in the box and Hooper drove his effort from 12 yards straight down the centre of the goal.

Marine could have had a fourth before the break but for a fine stop by Cavanagh to prevent Mark Burton turning into his own net.

It took less than two minutes after the interval for Supermarine to extend their lead further as the away side broke through Waldon, who held the ball up well before playing in Callum Parsons to his left and the midfielder calmly chipped the ball over Cavanagh.

Marine were able to take their foot off the gas from then on, with Webb introducing all three substitutes just before the hour mark.

And it was with one of the last touched of the game that Hooper got the fifth from the penalty spot after substitute George Reid was fell in the box by Cavanagh.
