DAVE Webb was left on cloud nine after his Swindon Supermarine side showed the guile to overcome Wimborne Town on Saturday and continue their impressive run of form.

Connor Waldon’s low strike at the end of the first half – his 15th goal of the season – proved the difference at the Webbswood Stadium, with Marine keeping their play-off credentials in rude health and ensuring they’ve now gone nine games without defeat.

Webb was most satisfied with how his team got their noses in front and then held on to that lead in a professional manner to earn a 1-0 victory that the Marine manager savoured deeply.

“We knew it would be a difficult game. They’re not a bad side and there were two good football sides on the pitch, so it was difficult,” said Webb.

“They tried to subjugate us a little bit in the first half and stop us playing, and they achieved that, but fair play to Connor Waldon, who’s scored a good goal just before half-time.

“We talked about just being a little bit more patient in our play in the second half and we didn’t get the second goal but we defended brilliantly – the back four and Conor Johns behind them were great.

“I’m really pleased. Sometimes, it’s just about getting a result and that’s nine games unbeaten now, so we just want to keep that going, really.

“A couple of the teams around us slipped up as well, so it’s a good result. Any win at home is a good win and the players deserve a lot of credit for what they’ve achieved.

“Sometimes, you’re never going to score three, four or five goals, and you have to be dogged and defend, and we did that brilliantly.

“A clean sheet’s always good to see and I’m over the moon with the result.”

The Marine chief, whose team are fifth in the Southern League Division One South and West, added: “I always want to see the team express themselves and play football and pass the ball, and I think you saw two sides that had the same philosophy but to be fair to Wimborne, they came and had a game plan – they got people behind the ball in the first half and made it difficult for us.

“That shows where Supermarine are as a club and as a team, when a team will come and they’re prepared to get behind the ball and hit you on the counter-attack.

“That’s respect to my players for what they’ve achieved so far.

“It’s great for us that we’ve got our goal and we’ve held onto it, and we’ll need to show that on Tuesday night when we play Slimbridge and then we play three sides after that who are all going to be pushing for the play-offs – Tiverton, Mangotsfield and Taunton.”
