Swindon Spitfires held off a Trowbridge Town Ladies fightback to claim a thrilling 5-4 win when they returned to Wiltshire Premier League action.

Both teams started brightly but Spitfires took the early advantage after four minutes when Katie Wadey’s run allowed Lucy March to power home.

Spits did not have to wait long for their second as Katrina Reynolds’ corner was headed in by Debbie Rose soon afterwards.

Trowbridge hit back almost immediately, which then spurred the home side into a third goal as good play between Reynolds and Sarah Stacey allowed the latter to net from 25 yards.

Spits’ fourth goal came just two minutes later when Natalia Wilson raced up the left and fired past the keeper.

Swindon completed their lot six minutes before half-time when a Charlie Reynolds cross fell kindly to Stacey, who again struck home from distance.

Trowbridge did score a second of their own before the interval and in the second half, Spits took their foot off the gas, although Wilson did go close to sixth goal but was denied by the post.

Goals in the 75th and 79th minutes from Trowbridge cut Spits’ lead to one in the dying stages but they held on to claim all three points.
