FOOTBALL fans going to the match between Swindon Town and Oxford United this Sunday will see an increased police presence in hope of clamping down on anti-social behaviour.

Wiltshire Police have said while they urge all supporters to enjoy the match, they want to make sure that public safety is a priority before, during and after the game which kicks off at 12pm.

Thousands are expected to descend to the County Ground from mid morning to take up their seats with scores of Oxford United supporters set to arrive at Swindon Railway Station.

Superintendent Adrian Burt from Wiltshire Police, who is also match commander, said: “The public will notice an increase in police presence before, during and after the match and this is to maintain public safety whilst minimising community disruption.

“Body worn video cameras will be used by officers in order to support this event. The use of these cameras will help assist the police with capturing evidence for prosecutions in turn providing speedier justice.”

Police have also issued advice to supporters who usually walk to the ground from Tesco’s as they will not be permitted entry on that route. Instead, they will have to find an alternative way to the ground.

The fixture is an all-ticket for home and away fans and so there will be no ticket sales for the match on the day.

Superintendent Burt added: “Wiltshire Police are working closely with our partner agencies, including Swindon and Oxford Football Clubs, to make this a safe and enjoyable experience for all whilst reducing the impact of this event to the local community.

“Please ensure if you are travelling to Swindon to plan your journey well in advance as this event is likely to be a near sell out. As the game is on a Sunday please also be aware of the Sunday trading hours, and that there will be a reduced amount of licensed premises opening as a result.

“We encourage all supporters to enjoy themselves but we ask for your support to make it a safe event for all attending, and for the local community.”

In the past, derby clashes between the two clubs have seen a number of footie fans be arrested for anti-social behaviour.

At the away game in September, a total of six arrests were made by Thames Valley Police for minor disorders and Wiltshire Police hope their approach is successful at Sunday’s game.
